The wait has been considerable, yet the moment arrives: God, displeased with humanity, dispatches archangel Gabriel (Kevin Durand) to wipe out all people. Things proceed without much difficulty until the remaining humans begin resisting. They’ve taken refuge in a secluded American diner, and the expectant mother "Charlie" (Adrianne Palicki) manages to convince archangel Michael (Paul Bettany) that her unborn child might represent a chance for humanity's survival. He consents to abandon his angelic form and join their cause. But will he be able to stop the combined attack of his former colleagues, and maintain his defiance of divine authority? Perhaps this act of rebellion is part of some larger plan orchestrated by the gods? Bettany delivers a surprisingly effective performance, albeit in an over-the-top style, and the gloomy visual effects are also well-executed. However, the narrative itself feels rather thin, and it felt like an angelic reimagining of a John Ford film, only substituting a broken BMW for a stagecoach. Don't anticipate strong writing or deeply developed characters; attempting to find them will be disappointing. If you’re simply seeking a celestial clash of wills, feathers, and samurai swords, then this is an easily digestible action-adventure that passes the time without leaving much of an impression.
