Reese Witherspoon, playing "Elle," embodies the picture of a privileged college girl—beautiful, stylish, intelligent, and with a boyfriend, “Warner” (Matthew Davis), who seems to be the ideal match. However, his sudden departure for law school, abandoning her in favor of another woman, "Vivian" (Selma Blair), sets off a chain of events. She pursues him to Harvard with the goal of reclaiming him, and what follows is a competition. Her swift descent from a position of prominence to one of hardship forces her to reconsider what’s truly important—particularly when she encounters “Emmett” (Luke Wilson). He doesn't fit her usual preferences, or does he? I wonder if an American viewer might appreciate the college social scene that drives the story more than I did; as it was, I perceived a self-centered young woman facing minor setbacks. While there are humorous moments, they felt rather immature, and I can only hope Harvard has since made its admissions process more rigorous. Witherspoon delivers a solid performance—she effectively conveys something I found objectionable about her character; however, the plot ultimately struck me as too conventional. It’s not among the worst of the romantic comedies that emerged in the early 2000s, but it's far from being exceptional either.
