I'll admit, getting this film felt impulsive; the presence of Nicolas Cage was really my sole motivation. That turned out to be an error! A little more investigation beforehand would have saved me some money. I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece, but I did hope for at least a passable disaster or apocalypse story. Unfortunately, it's far from that. On this one, I agree with those criticizing the movie, even the reviewers over at Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not a good film. It had the potential to be reasonably enjoyable. The core concept isn’t groundbreaking, but it could have been executed well. However, it’s just saturated with religious themes that feel forced. Once you try to ignore all of that—and it's quite difficult because it’s constantly shoved in your face—there’s not much substance left. The characters act strangely, and the dialogue is mostly gibberish. The movie’s effort to create unique personalities, including a grating little person, feels contrived. The action sequences and special effects are generally poor, and any attempts at building suspense during the plane's landing fall flat. Seriously, you see a plane approaching without anyone at the controls, flying straight ahead; it doesn’t require exceptional intelligence to realize something is wrong. Being over the Atlantic, a small adjustment to the course would have sufficed, and there was ample time to make one. But no, the writer apparently wanted Cage's character to fly like a runaway train until it was too late. And don’t even get me started on the absurdity of someone driving a pickup truck down a highway, knocking over plastic cones to "clear" a landing strip. The only reason this movie receives any positive marks is that I appreciate Nicolas Cage, even when he's in something as disappointing as this.
