There are moments in life when people feel an undeniable urge to follow a path, even if they don't fully grasp why, and can’t turn back regardless of the sacrifices involved. This was true for Elizabeth “Lee” Miller (played by Kate Winslet), who transitioned from a successful career as a fashion model to becoming a battlefield photographer for the British edition of Vogue during World War II. She could have easily enjoyed a comfortable retirement, but she felt compelled to find meaning and purpose, leading her to willingly put herself in harm’s way. Through this choice, she created some of the most recognizable images of the war in Europe, and the stories behind them are shared and brought to life in this compelling film directed by Ellen Kuras. The movie explores Miller's journey, detailing the difficult decisions she faced both in her personal and professional lives, as well as her determination to record the reality of a conflict that many people didn’t have easy access to, certainly not like we do now. While the storytelling occasionally feels disjointed, it still offers a collection of fascinating glimpses into various episodes from this improbable but respected journalist's career. The film’s attention to historical detail effectively contrasts the worlds she inhabited – the sophistication of high fashion and the harshness of wartime – complemented by Winslet’s outstanding performance (which seems destined for awards consideration), along with strong supporting roles from Andrea Riseborough, Marion Cotillard, Samuel Barnett, and a surprisingly good Andy Samberg. Despite all this, it's puzzling how quickly this film disappeared from cinemas. “Lee” genuinely deserved more recognition, but fortunately, it’s now accessible for streaming. It requires bravery to uphold one's beliefs during wartime, particularly when the risk is so high, as it was for Miller, and we are all better off because of her courage in showing us what might have been missed, yet what everyone needed to see.
