The movie is alright, but the final moments really fell flat. I honestly don’t understand the decision behind this particular conclusion; it felt like they left several threads unresolved. It's sadly common for filmmakers to damage otherwise good movies with a disappointing finish. There were some strong performances though, particularly from Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke. Kevin Bacon appears, but only for about five minutes—or less. Considering the actors involved, it’s clear this production wasn't low-budget, so ending it on such a sour note seems counterproductive. The story itself was well-developed with some interesting turns of events, which leads me to believe the book must have been quite good. Now I am curious enough to read it and see how the original compared.
