Sam Esmail’s direction combines with Rumaan Alam’s original story to create a film that examines family relationships, problems within society, and how fear and not knowing what’s happening affects people. The movie moves closer to being a standard disaster film than some might expect, but it still has a lot of substance. The characters are complex, and the actors—particularly Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali—are excellent, which helps bring these ideas to life in a way that makes you think about what’s going on today. Beautiful visuals and music add to the feeling of suspense, even if there are moments when the camera work is noticeable, the story doesn't move along as quickly as it could, and some things feel like they're repeated. Ultimately, it’s a very interesting warning that I think people should watch before the year is over. Rating: B
