Set during World War II, this film presents a compelling story centered on the secrets and deceptions within a small community. A mysterious figure known only as "The Raven" begins circulating damaging anonymous letters throughout the village of 'St. Robin'. These letters primarily target the local doctor, “Germain” (played by Pierre Fresnay), insinuating he’s involved in a forbidden relationship with "Laura" (Micheline Francey), who is married to the town's psychiatrist, "Vorzet" (Pierre Larquey). As the letters escalate and their impact grows, a tragic event forces everyone to investigate and uncover the sender—a search that reveals various wrongdoings. “Denise” (Ginatte Leclerc), who appears unwell or possibly exaggerates her ailments, emerges as a particularly memorable character, seemingly the most likely suspect due to her scheming behavior. Fresnay delivers a strong performance as the reserved doctor, and it becomes clear that almost no one in the village is entirely truthful about their nature. Henri-Georges Clouzot skillfully directs both the actors and the viewers through ninety minutes of suspenseful intrigue, subtly incorporating commentary on Vichy France alongside a classic mystery reminiscent of "Sherlock Holmes." The ending feels somewhat hasty and cut off abruptly, but the preceding buildup is intense and captivating, making this film definitely worth seeing.
