It’s frustrating how often romance can drain the excitement out of an action movie! In this installment, with John Williams’ strings adding to the effect, we are forced to sit through a sickeningly sweet love story involving Hayden Christensen as Anakin and Natalie Portman as Padmé. Why couldn't they just find somewhere private? Ewan McGregor, playing Obi Wan, is now responsible for helping his student develop his abilities with the Force, but without granting him Jedi master status—understandably, he’s quite annoyed by that. Fortunately, he finds out about a clandestine army of clones—essentially "Jango Fett" lookalikes who resemble Stormtroopers and are equally ineffective in combat—and alongside “Yoda” and others, he mobilizes the Jedi order against the villainous “Count Dooku,” portrayed by Christopher Lee. Setting aside the romantic elements, it functions well as an action fantasy, and the final thirty minutes do manage to improve things somewhat. It’s worth a viewing for fans of the franchise, but it feels like a distant relative of the earlier films.
