I’m a lawman. Do you know what that means, Crowe? I put down men. Lawman is the work of director Michael Winner, with a script by Gerry Wilson. The film features Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Lee J. Cobb, Robert Duvall, Sheree North, and Richard Jordan. Jerry Fielding composed the music, and Robert Paynter handled the cinematography. Jared Maddox, portrayed by Lancaster, is the Lawman of the title. He comes to Sabbath to issue arrest warrants for a group that was responsible when an elderly man died. However, his serious way of doing things doesn’t make him popular with the people living there. A person has to face up to their actions. You can't really change who you are; if you attempt it, something will always pull you back. This is a standard Western that explores the disagreement between upholding the law and what's right. Lawman, similar to its main character, carries a heavy atmosphere. The central question of whether Maddox’s methods are justified is exactly what Winner likes—a focus on revenge. There’s plenty of violence; the director seems happy to keep it graphic, and the important characters are well-developed. Everyone in the cast delivers strong performances, Winner and Paynter make excellent use of the Durango locations, and the overall look of the film is top quality. It's a movie with some real depth that challenges conventional ideas, featuring intelligent conversations from characters who have been carefully crafted. I suggest it to people who enjoy Westerns geared towards adults. 8/10
