The film Lawless presents what’s described as the real story of the Bondurant brothers, and my wife chose it for us to watch. I honestly knew nothing about it beforehand, but we ended up having a pleasant movie night. It's certainly a well-made film, though I couldn’t help feeling it had the potential to be even stronger. The performances are good, as is the cinematography and overall narrative. The story itself isn't particularly original; it follows a familiar bootlegging plotline. The new deputy character felt overly harsh, almost to the point of being hard to believe, though Guy Pearce did a solid job with the part—as did the rest of the main cast, really. It’s a well-acted movie overall. However, the pacing does suffer at times. There's not much significant action until near the very end when they finally confront that unpleasant deputy. While I can see why it unfolds this way, the film feels slow for quite a while. I would have liked to see the older Bondurant brothers more involved in the action; instead, we mostly follow Jack (played by Shia LaBeouf) through his various escapades and romantic interests, which ultimately leads him—predictably—to guide that same deputy to their illegal distillery. It’s hard to believe someone could survive having their throat cut, so that part seemed a bit far-fetched. It's a good movie, better than many others out there, but it isn't quite my kind of film. I thought the ending, with Forrest falling into the frozen lake, was underwhelming. Still, I’d give it 6 out of 10 stars—no higher, in my opinion.
