I encountered this film some time ago, and I viewed it again recently. My feelings about it are somewhat mixed. While the movie doesn’t entirely stand the test of time—the writing, performances, rhythm, plot, and other aspects aren't as strong as they once were—that almost seems beside the point when considering its value. It’s likely a more significant film than people realize. It's difficult to overemphasize how innovative this movie was at the time, providing onscreen portrayals and perspectives for groups and experiences that had been largely ignored. Looking back now, the romantic elements feel a bit formulaic, reminiscent of what you might see on Hallmark or Lifetime television, but when it came out, it was remarkable that a film like this could have such wide influence with its message. I would suggest this movie to anyone who is interested in films centered around LGBTQ+ themes, independent filmmaking, and the evolution of those fields over the last three decades.
