‘Late Night’ isn’t flawless; some adjustments to the editing and script would have been beneficial. The film repeatedly emphasizes themes of “women,” “women in comedy,” and “women of color”—and perhaps that's precisely its point. While these ideas aren't aggressively presented, their presence is noticeable because they are seldom seen in movies. I personally wished Kaling’s character had a background that matched her moral standing and professional ambition, but this is simply my perspective. Regardless, she delivers a strong performance and more than holds her own against Thompson, who shines as an intelligent, formidable woman with a sharp edge. Seeing ‘Late Night’ is certainly time well spent.
