It's reassuring to witness that personal growth can happen at any point, as demonstrated in Lisa Steen’s first film. This moving and perceptive comedy-drama centers on Louise (Karen Gillan), a 28-year-old woman living in Brooklyn who desperately needs to turn her life around. After breaking her hip during a drunken episode, she has surgery, but while recovering in the hospital, she's placed in a room with Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein), an elderly woman who only speaks Polish and seems generally unhappy. Despite some initial difficulties, Louise begins to understand Antonina’s quiet anger at feeling disregarded and unexpectedly finds herself looking after her even after leaving the hospital. Through this unexpected connection, Louise starts taking her own life more seriously, moving past her careless habits and fulfilling her responsibilities, especially reconnecting with her mother, Dorothy (Talia Balsam), who is experiencing early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. The film suggests it's possible for people needing to get their lives on track to do so, even if they stumble occasionally. “Late Bloomers” offers a pleasant blend of humor—much of which catches you off guard—and gentle, heartfelt scenes, all enhanced by the strong performances from the two main actors and several memorable supporting characters. The story does wander at times, but these moments are easily overlooked considering how much the director, cast, and crew achieve. I'm eager to see what Steen creates in the future, as this film marks a very encouraging beginning to what seems like it will be a successful career.
