Wuchak on Last Train from Gun Hill

5/10 · May 11, 2020

Arizona serves as the backdrop for a story that recalls “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” and shares qualities with "3:10 to Yuma." The film centers on a principled marshal (Kirk Douglas) who captures the offspring of a wealthy rancher (Anthony Quinn)—a man guilty of serious crimes—and intends to transport him by train. However, the rancher and his associates are resolved to prevent this from happening, no matter what it takes. Carolyn Jones appears in a supporting role. John Sturges’ direction of “Last Train from Gun Hill” (1959) evokes a feeling comparable to Sturges' "Gun Fight at the O.K. Corral" while borrowing ideas from "3:10 to Yuma," but ultimately falls short of either film’s quality. Quinn portrays a character who is frustratingly simpleminded; he won’t accept responsibility for his son’s violent acts, including rape and murder. The ethnicity of the victim seems unimportant to the narrative. The final confrontation feels contrived and unbelievable. Furthermore, there's an excessive amount of inactivity, making the movie feel drawn out. Despite these shortcomings, it is a passable Western from the 1950s featuring two well-known performers. The film’s running time is 1 hour, 35 minutes, and filming occurred in various Arizona locations, including Old Tucson, with additional scenes filmed at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. GRADE: C+
