This film felt like a trip back to simpler times, and it proved to be quite pleasant. It's truly one of the older-style Westerns, recounting the tale of two courageous individuals facing off. There are no elaborate visual effects, no science fiction elements, no angry displays, and thankfully no inappropriate language. It was genuinely pleasing to see Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn in this movie; they both seemed perfectly cast, and I’ve always appreciated them as performers. Perhaps that's just a personal connection on my part, because I doubt their acting would earn them awards at present. The narrative is every bit as traditional as the film itself. The spoiled son of a prosperous cattle rancher finds himself in serious difficulty, and his father attempts to shield him from the consequences of his actions, being an only child. However, the opposing side isn’t just as formidable as the cattle owner; they also represent the law. Director John Sturges handled the story effectively, including all the familiar components you'd anticipate: two men sizing each other up, a villain who ultimately becomes incarcerated, a woman caught between them, several fights with guns and fists, and naturally, a climactic showdown. I found myself appreciating every moment of this old classic.
