Eloise, portrayed by Thomasin McKenzie, is an introverted young woman with a fondness for 1960s style who travels from her rural home to London to study fashion. Following a negative experience in student housing, she takes up a room offered by Miss Collins, played by the late Diana Rigg. During her first night there, Eloise has a dream transporting her to 1960s Soho through the perspective of Sandie, an aspiring singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). The initial dream, where a naive Eloise observes Sandie successfully earning an audition from Jack (Matt Smith), is particularly striking. The shifts between Eloise in her sleepwear and Sandie in a flowing dress as they dance with Jack represent a noteworthy accomplishment both technically and in terms of choreography. The meticulous recreation of the vibrant lights and neon signs characteristic of 1960s Soho warrants considerable recognition. That initial dream sequence, standing alone, is quite enjoyable.
