I’m generally pretty lenient when judging science fiction films or romantic comedies. If the conversations sound genuine and clever, and the story doesn't feel condescending, then I’m usually on board. That’s why I found *Last Christmas* to be enjoyable, along with a cast that seemed well-chosen. The screenplay was created by Emma Thompson and her husband, Greg Wise—who also played Willoughby in *Sense and Sensibility*, another Thompson project. I thought Kate's transformation from someone fairly self-centered into a more admirable individual felt reasonable because it unfolded step by step and was influenced by circumstances around her, not solely by her connection with Tom, who rides a bike. The background of the Yugoslav family and its cultural aspects seemed disconnected from what was happening until about halfway through the film, when they started to feel like an important subplot. I did anticipate the big plot reveal at the end, though; since I write novels as a hobby, I often find myself analyzing where a narrative is headed rather than simply letting it unfold. *Last Christmas* might not become a yearly tradition for me, but I’ll probably watch it again next Christmas and give it another chance to evolve into a seasonal custom.
