Alex Parkinson's "Last Breath," a reimagining of his well-regarded 2019 documentary with the same title, tries to dramatize the terrifying reality of a deep-sea diver’s battle for survival. What results isn't a thrilling experience; instead, it falters due to manufactured sentimentality, underdeveloped characters, and uninspired storytelling. It's hard not to wonder if this fictionalized version was really necessary. The film recounts the remarkable true story of Chris Lemons (played by Finn Cole), a deep-sea diver who found himself trapped more than 300 feet below the surface when his umbilical cord broke during a standard saturation dive, leaving him with only minutes of oxygen in his backup tank. He managed to survive for over half an hour on the ocean floor, thanks to his fellow divers Duncan Allock (Woody Harrelson) and Dave Yuasa (Simu Liu), who refused to abandon him. Explanations exist regarding how he was able to live through it all, but the movie opts for a sentimental narrative where Chris’s survival is attributed to love. This diminishes the impact of his ordeal, which is unfortunate. The story had potential to be an exciting survival thriller, but instead, it feels stretched out and slow-paced, lacking the tension and urgency that were part of what actually happened. Despite efforts to build emotional depth, the connections between the characters feel superficial, underdeveloped, and poorly written. If you’re unfamiliar with the actual events or haven't seen the original documentary, you might struggle to connect with their struggles. My understanding of the relationships came from knowing the background already; the film doesn’t do enough to make you care. Because most of the movie takes place underwater, the visuals are dark and inadequately lit. The murky cinematography fails to create a compelling atmosphere or build suspense, which only makes the slow pace feel worse. Advertised as an exciting experience, it more closely resembles a standard made-for-TV film. While the real events were extraordinary, this adaptation suggests that some stories are better suited for documentary format. Unless you’re a devoted fan of the original documentary or enjoy underwater diving dramas, "Last Breath" isn't worth watching. It would be better to watch the 2019 documentary because it handles the story much more effectively than this disappointing fictionalized version.
