Landscape with Invisible Hand is an American science fictional film released in 2023, crafted by Cory Finley (known for Thoroughbreds and Bad Education) from M. T. Anderson’s 2017 novel. Asante Blackk portrays Adam Campbell, and Kylie Rogers plays Chloe Marsh as the central characters, both feeling somewhat underdeveloped. However, Tiffany Haddish delivers a noteworthy performance as Beth Campbell, the family matriarch. The two young people encounter each other near an outdated school slated for closure and are invited to reside in the basement of the Campbell home. They live in a struggling region where affluent individuals have relocated to aerial cities to work—performing minor tasks for the alien race known as the Vuvvs. The remaining population endures poverty, receiving rations from the Vuvvs and surviving by scavenging. The Vuvvs began observing humanity starting in the 1950s, a period they considered Earth’s peak era. Physically small and limited on Earth, they utilize technology and a peculiar device that makes sounds to communicate. Their arrival was peaceful, facilitated by replicators providing everything they needed, alongside the ability to generate more currency than Earth's wealthiest individuals—all in an effort to cultivate a compliant species within a Vuvv-influenced culture. Humans possess small metallic implants that transmit images and communications to the Vuvvs, who are particularly willing to pay for witnessing authentic human romance—a clear commentary on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The satirical elements are apparent critiques of capitalism and social hierarchies. Perhaps excessively overt, especially given the novel’s simplification for a younger audience. A more sophisticated script and plot geared toward adults might have improved the film (it's understandable why Brad Pitt became involved as a producer and recognized its potential). It shares similarities with Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Big Bug” (2022, Netflix), which was an overlooked gem from a uniquely talented filmmaker. I give it a grade of 6.0 out of 10.0 / C+
