The film begins in a rather unsettling way, as far as I was concerned! We’re introduced to "Lan Yu" (played by Ye Liu), a good-looking student who has a job at a restaurant where his coworkers are talking about the possibility of renting him out! It turns out that “Chen Handong” (Jun Hu) gets to do just that, and their initial connection feels very businesslike. The older man is a successful businessman while the younger one aspires to be an architect and lives simply. Surprisingly, they begin to form a bond, and even though "Chen" appears to be a respectable, heterosexual member of society, there’s definitely a sense of romance developing between them. What follows covers a significant portion of their lives—the good times and bad, including a conventional marriage—and tells the story of their occasionally complicated relationship leading up to an ending that I really didn't care for! The fact that I felt so let down by the conclusion speaks volumes about the quality of the acting and how engrossing the narrative is. Initially, you feel sympathy for "Lan Yu," but gradually you become more invested in him as a person, then with his lover, and ultimately with both of them as their personalities develop realistically. There’s a good supporting cast that occasionally helps to relieve some of the tension, but when it's just the two leads on screen, this becomes one of the better gay romantic dramas I've encountered.
