Matthew Broderick brings a real energy to this fantasy film. He manages to escape from captivity, finding his way through the sewers—which he describes as being “just like leaving the womb”—where he unexpectedly meets "Navarre" (Rutger Hauer) at a moment when he’s about to be killed. This character has a hawk companion, and it's not long before we learn that there’s something special about their connection: the hawk is actually "Isabeau" (Michelle Pfeiffer) after dark, transforming into a frightening wolf. The question becomes how to undo this spell, which requires confronting the severe bishop (John Wood) in his fortress of Aquila, as he and his forces are pursuing them all. It’s generally an entertaining fantasy. I felt Broderick’s character talked too much—I might have even wanted to hang him myself—but there's a good amount of sword fighting; some humor from Broderick’s portrayal of "Gaston the Mouse"; and amusing moments thanks to Leo McKern’s performance, all presented with a sense of visual flair. It does feel somewhat drawn out; trimming about twenty minutes would improve it, and the musical score is excessive, but the scenes involving falconry are well-shot, and the conclusion is exciting. I'd recommend seeing it.
