Florence Pugh delivers a strong performance within this narrative concerning "Katherine," who finds herself in a joyless and impersonal marriage with "Alexander" (Paul Hilton). Along with his father, "Boris" (Christopher Fairbanks), they regard her with a blend of acceptance and disdain. A potential escape from her dissatisfaction seems to arise through their dark-complexioned farm worker, "Sebastian" (Cosmo Jarvis). Following an absence of the husband for a prolonged period, she experiences contentment and satisfaction that makes the idea of reverting to a life of submission and monotony unthinkable—even if it involves risk. This story shares no connection with Shakespeare's play or its characters; any parallels are superficial—simply that "Katherine" gradually emerges from her delicate shell to become an assertive—and perilous—individual, resolved to obtain her happiness and independence at virtually any price. One immediately noticeable aspect is the absence of a musical score. There’s ample opportunity to appreciate the picturesque Northern English landscape, but when there's no spoken language (particularly during woodland sequences), the sounds are solely those of the natural world. I considered the conclusion especially appropriate for her character by that point—someone I found rather unsympathetic—and it offers a striking illustration of how inadequate 19th-century British law enforcement truly was!
