Greta Gerwig's striking first film, _Lady Bird_, begins with a scene of Marion and Christine asleep together in a hotel room. Their faces are near each other, resembling reflections. They share a physical resemblance, but also represent two facets of the same person. This is what allows them to connect so readily, and also why they’re capable of hurting one another profoundly. The film centers on this mother-daughter dynamic. It follows Lady Bird's (or Christine, as she prefers) senior year in Sacramento. She desperately wants to escape, dreaming of attending a liberal arts college on the East Coast. She feels a longing for something more than what’s around her; Sacramento seems like it’s already behind her.
