As floodwaters engulf the town around him and continue to climb, an elderly man finds himself needing to construct additions onto his already complex building to avoid being submerged. He's skilled with construction materials and quickly adds height above the rising waterline. However, peering down through a hatch he leaves open for fishing, he realizes his pipe has fallen in—a cherished item irreplaceable by any of his others. So, wearing a wetsuit, he descends into the water, embarking on a journey that becomes a reflection of his own life story. Each level of the tower triggers recollections of his wife, children, and the town before the disaster struck. These depictions of his past are presented in a straightforward and endearing style, which allows greater focus on a narrative that's both touching and occasionally humorous. To my mind, the steadily approaching water functioned effectively as an analogy for time’s constant progression. With each upward extension, he must build smaller spaces, and observing how this has impacted the structure over the years highlights the frequency with which he's been forced to rebuild. It seems inevitable that he will soon exhaust his resources or run out of time, and watching him face the solitude of his routine makes one wonder if that might ultimately be a fortunate outcome.
