I wouldn't have picked this film on my own, which might be why I found it surprisingly agreeable. However, my girlfriend really wanted to see it, so I agreed. It turned out she’d been swayed by the number of Oscars it won and hadn’t bothered to find out what kind of movie it was; ultimately, I ended up enjoying it considerably more than she did. It's essentially a fairly traditional Hollywood musical with a plot that isn’t particularly inventive, though the music and dancing are pleasant. The cinematography is exceptional as well; that’s really where this film shines. Much of the rest didn’t grab my attention so much, but the visuals are truly outstanding. The scene on the movie poster—where Mia and Sebastian dance—is a perfect example: everything is in dark blue tones except for Mia's bright yellow dress, which is simple yet striking. Everything else about this film is…fine. Fine acting, fine story, etc. As I mentioned earlier, it’s really not my type of movie, so please excuse me if I don’t seem overly excited. I’m sure people who enjoy musicals can't fathom how anyone could rate it anything less than perfect, but you know, everyone has different tastes. I’m having trouble deciding what to think about the ending. Part of me likes happy endings, and this one falls a little short of that ideal. On the other hand, I have to give credit to the writer/director for not taking the easy route and instead creating something a bit unconventional. I did feel like some elements were missing from the film. I would have liked to see scenes showing Mia and Sebastian achieving their individual ambitions. The way the movie jumps ahead to the ending felt as if they either ran out of funds or lost track of a significant portion of the story! Regardless, I ended up enjoying it more than I anticipated.
