This movie is really quite good! *La Haine* offers an engaging look at everyday life, and I found myself captivated throughout its roughly ninety-minute running time as it unfolded. Certain aspects of the camerawork (the black and white photography was a clever decision) and editing are especially noteworthy, while the conclusion leaves a powerful and lasting impression. The film’s purpose is communicated effectively. I didn't form a strong attachment to the central group of characters, except for Hubert. I also felt from early on that something significant was about to happen (though I wasn't expecting it to play out precisely as it did), so you spend much of the time anticipating what’s going to occur—but there’s no denying that the film does a solid job of keeping you in suspense. The characters aren't particularly compelling, although the actors portraying them deliver excellent performances. Hubert Koundé is the one who stood out most for me, even considering the memorable work of Vincent Cassel and Saïd Taghmaoui; I’ve seen both of those actors in a number of English-language films over the years.
