The performances aren't particularly remarkable on their own, but together they highlight the danger inherent in life within this Parisian suburban housing project. Disturbances the night prior have left the area feeling intensely strained. The police are acting cautiously, and the community feels primed to explode. Complicating matters further, a firearm was misplaced by an officer the previous evening, and one resident, "Vinz" (played by Vincent Cassel), has pledged retribution against another officer if his friend “Abdel” dies while hospitalized. It becomes apparent that "Abdel" suffered serious injuries during questioning at a police station and is now in a coma, which understandably heightened the existing mistrust and suspicion within the community. Director Matthieu Kassovitz has produced something powerful here; it's both moving and infuriating, atmospheric and frightening. As this day progresses into night, and "Vinz" along with his companions "Said" (Saïd Taghmaoui) and hopeful boxer "Hubert" (Hubert Koundé) travel toward the city center, events worsen with further unfortunate consequences. This isn't a simple film to experience, but it’s captivating and functions as a disheartening commentary on urban life and a lack of acceptance.
