Those familiar with “Boiling Point” from 2021 will likely understand what this drama is aiming for, since it's set in a busy New York restaurant kitchen. To diners, "The Grill" might seem calm, but behind the scenes, the kitchen is a mix of cooks, waitresses, and cleaners who speak different languages and have very distinct personalities. They work under Chef Lee Sellars and manager Luis, played by Eduardo Olmos, a character who seems to cause trouble when he learns that around $800 is missing from a cash register and the owner, Rashid (Oded Fehr), is furious. The investigation into the money becomes an excuse to reveal that everyone generally gets along, with the exception of Pedro (Raul Briones) and Max (Spenser Granese). Max often loses his temper because people aren’t speaking English in this kitchen, which feels like a tower of Babel. Meanwhile, Pedro is trying to get back together with waitress Julia (Rooney Mara), who's pregnant but doesn't plan on having his baby. As everyone works incredibly hard and the search for the money continues alongside an increasing sense of tension, the film promises a look at the industry, its customs, and how vulnerable many workers are—people with questionable legal status who aren’t treated much better than slaves. However, I didn't find that the movie really delivered on this promise. There’s simply too much talking, it goes on for far too long, and the characters feel underdeveloped. The performances weren't particularly captivating, and the script doesn’t do enough to make you care about any of them. There are too many angry arguments repeated without enough humor to keep things interesting, and as the story progresses, it loses its energy before approaching a somewhat ridiculous conclusion. It's an unfortunate letdown.
