This was really something special! I went into it knowing absolutely nothing about what to expect; I was just browsing stores yesterday and found an Asian DVD set at a great price. Since one of the movies was Jet Li’s Unleashed, I figured it was worth the low cost. When I got home, the description on the back of the case didn't reveal much – something about an Axe Gang, a character named Sing wanting to join them, and some elderly people living in a place called Pig Sty Alley who were surprisingly formidable. What I ended up seeing felt like a live cartoon, full of class and flair—the kind of film that’s the opposite of those more artistic Asian movies that have become really popular over the years. Stephen Chow (playing Sing) wrote, directed, produced, and stars in Kung Fu Hustle, and it's an incredibly fast-paced movie; the story is pretty thin, but honestly, it doesn't even matter because Chow has combined classic martial arts action with balletic comedy—it’s quite a sight. It’s as intense as a concert featuring Motorhead and Iron Maiden, yet surprisingly gentle at the same time! Amazing scenes will amaze you one minute and then have you laughing the next. I regret not discovering this film back in 2004, but even now, years later, it feels like a breath of fresh air on home video. Just watch it and go with the flow; enjoy it. 9/10
