The elderly and battle-tested ruler of “Valusia” initiates a purge of potential heirs, prompting the valiant “Kull” (Kevin Sorbo) to intervene. As a consequence, the weakened “Borna” unexpectedly designates him as his replacement! This decision doesn’t sit well with the bypassed “Prince Ducalon” (Dougie Henshall) and the general “Talibaro” (Thomas Ian Griffith), who immediately begin scheming to eliminate what they consider an interloper. Their plan involves reviving the ancient and malevolent “Queen Akivasha” (Tia Carrere)—someone so wicked she makes Medusa seem gentle—and, predictably, once she’s alive again, she pursues her own goals, forcing “Kull” to stop her from restoring her fallen empire and… well, you can imagine: world domination. While the visual effects show some ingenuity, and there are numerous action sequences, the rest of it feels like a low-budget, dimly lit TV movie shot almost entirely on a sound stage, lacking any real sense of danger or suspense. Sorbo displayed charm in “Hercules” (1995), but here, the narrative doesn’t allow for that as the story unfolds in a familiar fantasy style over ninety minutes—longing for "Krull" seemed like a better option at that point. I would have put my money on “Akivasha.”
