The movie centers on a boy, a monkey, and a large beetle who join forces for an adventure. It’s unlike traditional stop-motion animation; instead, it utilizes contemporary methods combining 3D printing with digital effects. This marks the directorial debut from the person behind 'ParaNorman' and 'The Boxtrolls'. The narrative follows Kubo, a boy born with one eye, who has been living in a seaside cave near a village, shielded from his grandfather, the moon king, and protected by his mother. He spent his childhood listening to tales of Hanzo, a celebrated samurai. However, after he is caught in the moonlight, problems arise. His only hope for survival becomes locating his father's armor, thus initiating a quest where he finds himself working alongside two other companions. The story draws from Japanese culture and unfolds in what appears to be an imagined ancient Japan. The film’s technical aspects are impressive; it was quite enjoyable to watch, especially since the framerate is higher than what you usually see in stop-motion films. Everything—the character designs, the music score, the movie's duration, and how quickly the story unfolds—was excellent, but the plot itself wasn’t as remarkable. It felt fairly standard and predictable. Despite that, it’s a very appealing film, especially for younger viewers. As I often mention when reviewing stop-motion animation, these kinds of movies are uncommon, so whenever one appears, it deserves consideration. Regardless of whether you enjoy it or not, I suggest you don't overlook it. _7/10_
