The moment 'Colwyn' (Ken Marshall) and 'Lyssa' (Lynette Anthony) are poised to pledge their eternal love, antagonists appear, causing destruction to her father’s castle and abducting the princess. He manages to live through it all because of 'Ynyr' (Freddie Jones)’s assistance, but after regaining consciousness, he becomes consumed with saving his captive. Believing that the emerald seer (John Welsh) might be able to offer some guidance, they embark on a journey to locate him in his secluded cave. During their travels, they run into a band of escaped convicts under the leadership of 'Torquil' (Alun Armstrong), whom the newly crowned king persuades to join them, promising freedom and honor if they are successful. Simultaneously, within his imposing fortress, the otherworldly ruler who has taken 'Lyssa' is tempting her with immense wealth and influence in exchange for becoming his queen. The question remains: can she resist long enough for 'Colwyn' to discover where she is—a feat that seems nearly unattainable—and then hopefully rescue her? Is it possible she’ll be swayed by the allure of golden robes and a crown? This film holds a special place among my fantasy adventures, and while the visual effects haven’t aged gracefully, the narrative remains strong, supported by Marshall's captivating performance and a cast comprised mostly of recognizable British actors. It occasionally feels sentimental now, but with laser-equipped soldiers in pursuit, a shapeshifting sorcerer, and Francesca Annis making brief appearances as the 'Widow of the Web', it’s an entertaining and undemanding movie that I remember fondly from my adolescence when films of this type were scarce.
