It’s difficult to give this movie much less than a six because Aaron Taylor-Johnson is undeniably appealing. Perhaps that's superficial, sure, but if physical appearance is the only thing a film has going for it, you might as well take your shirt off and be done with it! Unfortunately, that’s essentially all there is to say about this slow-moving superhero story. The "Kravinoff" brothers, "Dimi" (Billy Barratt) and "Sergei" (Levi Miller), are removed from their expensive school by their wealthy father (Russell Crowe) and taken on a hunting trip in Ghana, supposedly to help them become men. They're tracking a lion named "Czar," and an encounter with him, along with a local girl called "Calypso" (Diaana Babnicova), leaves the younger brother injured but significantly altered. Years later, “Sergei,” now portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has no relationship with his father, though he remains in contact with his brother (now Fred Hechinger), and has developed some incredibly animalistic ninja abilities. He’s presented as a force for good, entirely driven by instinct. Meanwhile, tensions are rising within the criminal underworld, and a chance meeting with an older "Calypso" (Ariana DeBose) leads to a final confrontation with a villain who needs to carry refrigerated gel packs in his backpack to prevent himself from developing an extremely tough hide. Throughout the film there are several violent scenes that allow the lead actor to display his physical skills, Crowe to affect a heavy Siberian accent, and Hechinger to appear as frail as possible. After that, there’s nothing original about this CGI-heavy production. The script is genuinely poor, and the plot really struggles to gain momentum as it progresses, quite literally, for over two hours. It feels like several episodes of a limited television series crammed into a movie; it's fragmented, disjointed, and the ending is rather disappointing. There’s clearly potential for another installment, but I suspect few will be eager to see it.
