"Kraken" hails from Russia and delivers an undersea monster action-adventure experience. Like many Russian films, "Kraken" boasts impressive cinematography. The visuals are stunning and expansive, vividly portraying the scenario of a Russian nuclear submarine engaged in a dangerous pursuit with a legendary sea creature while attempting a deep-sea rescue operation. The characters possess notable depth and complexity, which raises this story above a standard action movie. However, there’s still plenty happening; the film moves along at a good clip, filled with action and adventure sequences. My only real criticism concerns some of the computer-generated imagery. The whales, for instance, appeared more like oversized sea slugs. Overall, "Kraken" is an unexpectedly engaging monster action adventure that stands out from the many underwater monster films typically seen, most of which feel frivolous and unbelievable. It’s certainly worth watching.
