I found this film entertaining, though I do have concerns regarding how the story unfolds and its portrayal of K-pop idol lifestyles. SPOILERS AHEAD: 1. Was Rumi born with demonic heritage? Her mother was a demon hunter and her father a demon, suggesting that not all demons are inherently bad, correct? It’s unclear whether this is true or not. We aren't given any explanation about how Rumi’s mother passed away, nor what became of her father; it seems unlikely that a demon would deceive a woman into a relationship long enough to conceive a child. 2. The narrative establishes that all demons should have been banished when the Honmoon was sealed, so why are the cat and crow still present? Furthermore, what is their purpose? They’re charming, but what exactly *are* they? Are there “genuine” demons like Gwi-Ma, as well as "controlled" demons such as Jinu and his bandmates? 3. Gwi-Ma subjugates other demons and essentially condemns them to an eternity of suffering based on their guilt, and the film concludes by permanently imprisoning them all within the demon realm alongside him? Seriously? Even after Jinu demonstrates that redemption is possible for demons through compassion and understanding?! I’m baffled. This last point is my most significant problem with the plot. Regarding the depiction of K-pop idols; their lives appear glamorous on the surface, but this isn't the full picture. These performers aren’t simply born into fame; they are manufactured. These young people endure incredibly difficult experiences—there’s really no other way to put it. The problem isn't necessarily with the K-pop industry itself, but rather a broader cultural issue. There is intense pressure placed on individuals in Korea, and this can unfortunately lead to tragic outcomes like suicide. South Korea has an alarmingly high rate of suicide. The movie depicts our K-pop characters enjoying leisurely meals and seemingly carefree moments, whereas, in reality, these performers are often subjected to strict diets and restrictions regarding what they can eat or do. I did enjoy the film, but I’ve learned too much about the actual experiences of K-pop idols to ignore the inaccurate, idealized representation presented here.
