John Chard on Kong: Skull Island

8/10 · Aug 3, 2017

That was certainly an unusual experience. This is the second installment in the reimagining of those well-known creatures from film history. Following the 2014 version of Godzilla, which didn’t quite hit the mark tonally, it's not a shock to see this take on the King Kong story embracing a full-blown blockbuster approach—and in that respect, it works—sort of. The storyline is pretty basic: a group of people from different walks of life arrive at the uncharted Skull Island, each with varying degrees of curiosity about what they might find there. They quickly discover that it’s filled with all sorts of problems—big ones! It's obvious that those involved, led by director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, are attempting to mix exciting action sequences with some attempts at deeper thoughts about the time period the film is set in (1973), and also about people's tendency to be foolish. On the surface, the battles and monster mayhem are fun to watch, but it occasionally becomes too absurd for its own good. What’s even more disappointing is that it lacks depth, with nothing particularly substantial going on, especially when it comes to the characters, which reduces a talented cast to one-dimensional figures in this monkey adventure. Despite these issues, though, the movie is enjoyable, with enough excitement and witty lines to make the time spent on Skull Island worthwhile. Whether it’s humans versus monsters or exploring the strange landscape they travel through, it's pure popcorn entertainment. There are some amusing moments included (like a jab at Richard Nixon), and the references to Coppola and Cameron and others are quite nice. You might need to adjust your expectations to avoid being bothered by its shortcomings, and it’s easy to see why many people dislike it, but it’s far from terrible. Hopefully, the next film in this series will be even better, because Kong, Zilla, and the other monster deities deserve that much. 7/10
