This documentary, featuring Thor Heyerdahl’s narration, offers a remarkable look at how six sailors set out on an incredible voyage across the Pacific Ocean using a raft constructed without any metal or nails. Their goal was to travel by current from Peru to Polynesia, and they had to bring everything necessary for the journey with them. The prevailing beliefs of the time suggested that fish were only found close to shore and obtaining fresh water through rainfall would be impossible. However, during their travels, they realized these notions were simply old sailors' stories and that there was an abundance of life in the ocean both above and below the surface – creatures that would sometimes provide sustenance and occasionally pose a danger throughout their risky adventure. It seems as though the sea was generally favorable to them for their three-month trip; however, they still had to carefully avoid sharp reefs, and taking a dip wasn't always advisable if you wanted to keep all your body parts. Fortunately, most of the footage they captured remains, resulting in an engaging travelogue enhanced by Heyerdahl’s knowledgeable and excited commentary, which highlights just how clever these early explorers were despite lacking a compass or any means of propulsion. The central purpose was to demonstrate that Polynesia could have been settled from the east rather than, as previously thought, from the west. I believe he succeeded in doing so.
