Knowing comes from director Alex Proyas, with the screenplay by Ryne Douglas Pearson, Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. Nicolas Cage leads the cast alongside Rose Byrne, Chandler Canterbury, Lara Robinson, Ben Mendelsohn and Nadia Townsend. The score is composed by Marco Beltrami, and Simon Duggan handles the cinematography. The story begins in 1959 when Lucinda Embry (Robinson), a young student, starts experiencing voices. When she’s asked to contribute a drawing for her school's time capsule – intended to be opened half a century later – she produces a sequence of seemingly random numbers. Fifty years pass, and Professor Jonathan Koestler (Cage) and his son find themselves drawn into the mystery by those same numbers during the capsule’s opening ceremony. What do they signify? And are they important?... The disaster movie remains a popular form of entertainment, even though critics often overlook it. Audiences continue to pay for tickets, even with all the advancements in technology. The destruction used to be depicted through elaborate sets and paintings; now it involves expensive special effects. Nevertheless, these films can still provide enjoyment, which is why Knowing exists and has garnered a following. It’s an enjoyable science fiction film with supernatural elements that slowly reveals its secrets until the final moments of suspense. The scientific basis is clearly questionable (it's a movie, after all), and the pervasive sense of gloom – not only is the world facing disaster, but the main characters are also dealing with personal problems – might be overwhelming for some viewers. However, Cage delivers a dedicated performance, Proyas demonstrates his talent for creating striking visuals, and the scenes of devastation are genuinely disturbing and memorable. Knowing offers moments of wonder and beauty alongside its more ridiculous aspects. Those who dislike Nicolas Cage’s performances should disregard their prejudices; if you appreciate science fiction disaster films and haven't experienced this one yet, give it a try – it’s quite entertaining. And I should mention that the film is visually stunning as well! It earns a 7/10 rating.
