It’s evident that Ginger Rogers was far more than simply a dance partner; she essentially carries this charming melodrama on her shoulders. The story begins with her character working as the secretary for Philadelphia businessman "Wyn Stratford" (Dennis Morgan), and it isn't long before they develop feelings for each other... but what will their future hold? He comes from an affluent background, while she’s a hardworking woman of Irish descent. Director Sam Wood guides us through a tender narrative as their relationship progresses, experiencing both highs and lows as they attempt to bridge the differences between them with their shared desires. Rogers portrays "Kitty" with grace and intention; displaying spirit when necessary, and romance and sensitivity at other times. Morgan is handsome, and his depiction of a young man somewhat constrained by societal expectations (of wealth, if not family) is also well-done. For its era, the film explores certain themes that could be seen as daring, and it deviates from the predictable happily-ever-after conclusion one might anticipate. Winning an Academy Award against a field including Fontaine, Hepburn & Bette Davis says a lot.
