Wuchak on Kissin' Cousins

4/10 · Nov 16, 2020

_**A goofy rural comedy featuring Elvis Presley and Yvonne Craig**_ An Army officer (Presley) is sent to the Smoky Mountains with the task of persuading a family of mountain people to permit the construction of a missile base on their land. Yvonne Craig portrays one of the daughters who owns the private mountain. "Kissin' Cousins," released in 1964, marks Elvis’s 15th film out of a total of 31 movies he made. Though it ranks among his weaker efforts, this is an enjoyable and musical romp set in the mountains, with Craig and other attractive women adding to the appeal, such as Beverly Powers as Trudy, who is part of the ‘Kittyhawk’ group. It's clear that filming didn’t take place on the East Coast but rather in Southern California – a common occurrence, similar to what was seen in "Kid Galahad" (1962). A noteworthy aspect of this film is Presley’s portrayal of two characters: Officer Josh Morgan and the blond hillbilly Jodie Tatum. “Kissin' Cousins” can be considered an early version of “The Beverly Hillbillies,” which came out in 1993. It might elicit some eye-rolling and could feel drawn out if you aren’t in the right frame of mind. The film runs for 1 hour and 36 minutes. Filming occurred at Big Bear Valley, within the San Bernardino National Forest in California. GRADE: C/C-
