John Chard on Kiss Me Deadly

9/10 · Mar 3, 2020

I was searching for something specific just the other day, and now I’m even looking for something simple like a piece of string. Mike Hammer is driving along a dark road when a scantily clad woman makes him pull over, and this incident sets in motion a series of events that could have devastating results for everyone involved. Kiss Me Deadly is a brutal film; it features a collection of characters who are intensely unlikable. It seems like no one can be trusted, and on the surface, each person’s actions appear driven by selfishness. With torture, murder, plenty of violence, and an engaging mystery plot, it's easy to understand why the movie has earned such a strong reputation over time—it’s rough around the edges, but it’s still a captivating film. Ralp Meeker is superb as Hammer, a man who won’t give up; he’s constantly being knocked down, but he always comes back stronger. He embodies that classic tough-guy persona who acts first and asks questions later. Robert Aldrich's direction is spot on, with unusual camera angles drawing the viewer into this strange world Hammer finds himself in. We often only see partial views of the antagonists—just their torsos—making them seem like faceless criminals. The filmmaking is very direct and effectively creates a thriller experience. Kiss Me Deadly has influenced numerous films since its release, including "Repo Man" and "Pulp Fiction," and its impact can still be felt today. It contains an ending that’s frequently discussed (both the restored and alternate versions work well in different ways), leaving room for interpretation and debate. What's certain is that it's explosive and now stands as a definitive crime classic from the film noir tradition. 8.5/10
