This adaptation brings H. Rider Haggard’s tale of jungle adventure and a quest for riches to the screen with considerable visual flair. In this particular telling, Stewart Granger, playing Allan Quatermain, is enlisted by Deborah Kerr, as Elizabeth Curtis, to locate her brother who disappeared while looking for King Solomon's fabled treasure. Departing from the 1937 film, it shifts its focus toward a romantic storyline – an outcome that seems almost inevitable considering the actors involved; consequently, much of the original’s rough edges are smoothed over, and the suspense stems more from their developing connection than from what they encounter in dangerous surroundings. The movie is visually impressive (recognized with an Oscar for cinematography), but some narratives simply work better when presented in black and white.
