Many action-adventure stories have drawn from H. Rider Haggard’s "She" and "King Solomon's Mines," yet I suspect even he wouldn’t approve of this unoriginal take. The film’s tone resembles something like “Carry on Quatermain,” introducing us to Jesse, portrayed by Sharon Stone, who is searching for her missing father. He ventured into the jungles of ancient Sheba in pursuit of the fabled mines overflowing with jewels. To assist her, she recruits the renowned hunter Quatermain, played by Richard Chamberlain, and they embark on their journey. Simultaneously, Colonel Bockner, a power-hungry Bosch officer portrayed by Herbert Lom, has enlisted the help of Dogati, played by John Rhys-Davies, for the very same goal – creating a competition! While Chamberlain seems to be having fun in this chaotic film as he throws dynamite around, and Lom is clearly overacting like he’s back in his “Pink Panther” glory days, Stone doesn't seem engaged at all. She lacks the energy of someone like Karen Allen or the understated grace of Deborah Kerr, and her performance adds little to the overall experience. Rhys-Davies thrives in these kinds of roles, fitting into them effortlessly; he is considerably more lively than the actual crocodiles we see, blending old footage with newly filmed scenes. The film starts quickly with numerous adventures, but the computer-generated imagery is quite noticeable, leading up to an ending that desperately needs a musical number. It’s diverting, in a strange way, but it's hard to call it genuinely good.
