It was an uphill battle to create something comparable to the classic film from 1933, so one has to ask if the effort was worthwhile. The resulting movie is quite surprising. While the character names have been altered and the storyline reworked to focus on oil prospecting rather than a hunt for a creature, the core narrative remains consistent: Jessica Lange portrays "Dwan," who captures the attention of the giant ape. Jeff Bridges ("Prescott") and Charles Grodin ("Wilson") embark on a dangerous pursuit into the jungle to rescue her, encountering numerous obstacles along the way. Simultaneously, the captive woman finds herself developing feelings for her enormous captor, leading one to wonder if she even desires to be rescued—something we certainly hope isn't true. The film feels sluggish initially, and when it finally picks up pace, it presents a remarkably unremarkable adaptation of what is considered an iconic romance in cinema, with performances that feel stiff and uninspired. Although the color photography is technically impressive, it inadvertently strips the movie of much of its emotional depth, giving it the appearance of a made-for-TV production lacking any real sense of danger or feeling. Lange delivers some convincing screams early on, but her portrayal lacks vulnerability. The supporting actors don't fare much better, consisting largely of performers who seem more suited to daytime television, and delivering dialogue that clearly needed further refinement if it intended to hold the audience’s attention for two and a quarter hours. Just because technology allowed this film to be made doesn't mean it should have been. It is up to each viewer to decide, but I suspect few will find it enjoyable or even remotely close to the original.
