The production team behind this Elvis film clearly invested heavily in it. Michael Curtis directed, and Harold Robbins’s novel served as the basis for the story about "Danny Fisher." He begins as a poor student who finds employment at the club featured in the title. His youthful appeal and dance style captivate viewers, but also draw the attention of "Ronnie" (Carolyn Jones), a playful woman who is secretly the lover of the club’s questionable owner, "Maxie" (Walter Matthau). Trouble arises, yet when he recognizes the potential to earn money through his singing – for certain individuals – he becomes increasingly entangled in disreputable activities. Fortunately, there's a chance for him to change course thanks to "Nellie" (Dolores Hart), a kindhearted woman who encourages "Danny" to look beyond his immediate circumstances and consider a more ethical path. Will those around him permit either of them that opportunity? In my opinion, this is the finest film Presley ever made. Curtis establishes an impressively dark and realistic setting for this story exploring love, desire, avarice, and aspiration. The lead actor seemed slightly too mature for the part, but he still embodies the rebellious teenager – reminiscent of a younger Marlon Brando; and while the songs aren’t his most outstanding or unforgettable work, they are integrated effectively into the plot. The outcome is predictable, yet there's an abundance of star power on display from someone who truly was just that.
