Clive Owen portrays the central figure, leading a group of Sarmatian cavalrymen who are concluding their fifteen-year service with the Roman army as it withdraws. Their final assignment takes them to northern Britain, past Hadrian’s wall, with the goal of rescuing a family—their teenage son is a favored godson of the Pope. Saxon forces are gathering just south of the wall, and Merlin's Woads appear satisfied to allow the Romans and Saxons to fight each other before seizing whatever remains afterward. It’s an acceptable adventure film featuring a solid group of British actors including Ioan Gruffudd, Ray Winstone, Joel Edgerton, and Hugh Dancy among his fellow soldiers, as well as Mads Mikkelsen and his hawk, all traveling across the countryside while encountering conflict. The visuals are pleasing, and the combat sequences—particularly the one on the frozen lake—are also quite well done. However, the performances from the main actors are disappointing. Clive Owen, Ray Winstone (holding an apple with what seems like a child’s arm), and Saxon leader Stellan Skarsgård all deliver underwhelming portrayals, further hampered by weak dialogue. Keira Knightley demonstrates skill with a bow but otherwise the film misses its mark in several areas. Despite a brief musical contribution from Lisa Gerrard, it's hard to believe this made it into theaters—though it might be enough to pass two hours on television when there’s nothing else to do indoors.
