The film begins with a jarring combination of elements: snowy settings, music reminiscent of a heartwarming Christmas story featuring redemption, and the appearance of Basil Rathbone bundled up in a heavy coat! Something feels off from the very beginning. "Mrs. Herries" (Aline MacMahon) returns to her house and finds “Abbott” (Rathbone) creating street art in the snow. Feeling sympathy for this pleasant and gentle man, she invites him inside for tea. Soon after, her cook has departed, her maid "Rose" (Nola Luxford) is considering quitting, and her home is filled with a group of people who seem content to stay there and clearly have ulterior motives. They essentially hold the woman captive, making the situation appear quite dire. A small amount of hope arises when her determined nephew “Peter” (Frank Albertson) suspects something isn't right. While I wouldn’t say the film generates intense suspense, Rathbone delivers a performance that is both intimidating and deceitful, and the rest of the actors—particularly Lily Malyon as "Mrs. Edwards" and Dudley Digges as her husband—contribute to creating a palpable sense of tension during the final hour of this drama. It’s definitely not what I anticipated, nor what the title implies, but it's certainly worth seeing.
