It’s my feeling that this stands out as the finest of the Ealing Comedies, largely thanks to a superb performance by Dennis Price portraying an aristocrat who feels he’s been wronged and decides to take revenge on those he holds responsible for his past misfortunes. Alec Guinness is remarkable, taking on the whole "D'Ascoyne" family—particularly memorable as the vicar, in my opinion—and Valerie Hobson and Joan Greenwood are also perfectly cast within this delightful, somewhat morbid comedy that includes a few unexpected developments to keep things interesting. It’s simply one of those films you can return to repeatedly without it ever feeling stale.
