A professional hitman (Mickey Rourke) joins forces with a young psychopath (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to track down a separated couple (Diane Lane & Thomas Jane) who witnessed a failed assassination. Rosario Dawson appears as the younger man’s girlfriend. "Killshot," released in 2008 and directed by John Madden, reportedly experienced issues during post-production, leading it to be shelved, reworked, and ultimately re-edited. Some people feel this resulted in a disjointed experience. I didn't notice that at all; the movie seemed very well-made, and I never felt like the narrative was unclear regardless of what scenes were cut or changed. The plot is straightforward and easy to understand. Mickey Rourke delivers as usual, even if he portrays a familiar type of character—something most actors do. His role here resembles the appealing, troubled persona seen in "The Wrestler" (2008) and "Passion Play" (2010), with the added detail that he kills people for a living. That’s certainly a significant distinction, and it does prompt viewers to disapprove of his actions, but it's still difficult to truly dislike him, unlike his less-developed partner. Whether you like him or not, the Rourke character needs to face consequences for what he's done (or at least should). Regarding that partner, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is excellent as a despicable person with virtually no positive traits. Something occurs to him toward the end, and you can’t help but feel relieved. Thomas Jane consistently portrays dependable masculine leads, and Lane does the same for feminine roles. The film explores not only the threat of violence from those pursuing them but also the possibility of the couple rebuilding their relationship. It's definitely a thriller/drama that balances substantial dramatic moments with sudden bursts of intense action. The music complements the mood effectively, and there’s an outstanding song on the soundtrack ("Monkey" by Low). The film has a running time of 1 hour, 35 minutes and was filmed in Port Perry, Uxbridge and Toronto, Canada, as well as Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Detroit. GRADE: B
