It’s an enjoyable film that I would happily watch again and suggest to others. It seems like there’s a push and pull regarding David Hasselhoff; some moments acknowledge his faded fame, while others seem designed to highlight his continued recognition. I always enjoy seeing Dr. Ken Jeong perform—he's genuinely funny—and he’s easily the most amusing person in this movie. Will Sasso's character doesn't elicit much laughter, and Rhys Darby is only entertaining because of how eccentric his role is. Colton Dunn’s jokes felt awkward and I didn't always get them, though the idea of having to kill someone you care about does hold some interest, even if it isn't particularly humorous. There are many talented comedians involved, but their abilities feel underutilized in favor of situational comedy. A significant portion of the film revolves around unfortunate events befalling Ken, and while I might have found it more amusing with someone like Ben Stiller ("Duplex"), my appreciation for Ken Jeong’s work makes these moments sad rather than funny. This feels like a comedy crafted by comedians for other comedians, which means that general viewers may not fully appreciate it because the humor isn't always straightforward. The focus is on the scene itself, and while those scenes can be amusing, truly memorable jokes are scarce. While I don’t mind situational comedy, it requires considerable effort to make it effective; we end up spending a lot of time setting up the joke or justifying why it’s supposed to be funny. I suspect my mood simply wasn't right for laughing at someone's life unraveling, but I genuinely believe this film had the potential to be excellent rather than merely decent.
